JERUSALEM — Former Israeli Defense Minister Yitzhak Rabin said Saturday that he will challenge Shimon Peres for leadership of the left-leaning Labor Party, and polls indicated that Rabin could lead the party to victory.
A poll published Friday in the Yediot Ahronot newspaper showed Rabin defeating caretaker Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir of the right-wing Likud Party by a 2-1 margin if direct elections for Israel’s leader were held.
Israeli voters choose parties, not candidates, but there is growing popularity for direct elections.
