Panel OKs $3.9 Million for Children Hurt in Crash

A Los Angeles City Council panel on Tuesday endorsed paying $3.9 million to a young boy and his sister who were injured when a city van driven by a lifeguard crashed into their home.
Brian Casales, 5, and his sister, Elizabeth, 11, were hurt when the van, driven by Shawn Jordan, crashed into their home near 70th and San Pedro streets in 1985, Assistant City Atty. Philip Sugar said.
Brian, who was 8 months old at the time, suffered a massive head injury and brain damage. His sister had bruises and tissue damage.
Under the settlement approved unanimously by the Budget and Finance Committee, $3.8 million would be used to purchase a lifetime insurance annuity for Brian and $100,000 would go to his sister.
