Taiwan Offers Talks With China

TAIPEI, Taiwan — The government of Taiwan would welcome talks with China, the presidential spokesman said Wednesday, which could pave the way for closer ties with Beijing.
President Lee Teng-hui, in a meeting Tuesday with lawmakers who had just returned from China, said he favors government-to-government dialogue between Taiwan and China.
Lee ruled out talks between the Chinese Communist Party and Taiwan’s ruling Nationalist Party.
He also said talks could not be held until Beijing rules out the use of force against Taiwan and stops trying to isolate it diplomatically.
There was no immediate comment from China.
