Gorbachev Gets Pay Raise to $76,800 a Year

MOSCOW — The Soviet Union’s national legislature voted President Mikhail S. Gorbachev a 160% pay raise Monday, boosting his salary to $76,800 a year.
The official Tass news agency said that the Supreme Soviet approved a monthly gross salary of $6,400 for Gorbachev--16 times the average wage of an industrial worker.
He also has official residences near Moscow and in the Crimea and a hospitality budget within international standards.
After taxes, the Kremlin chief will earn $3,680. His former gross salary was officially $2,400 a month.
By comparison, President Bush earns $200,000 a year before taxes, or about $16,667 a month.
The law formally ends a long tradition of Kremlin secrecy over the earnings and benefits of high office.
