Record Telethon: The Children’s Miracle Network Telethon, a benefit for hospitalized children, raised a record $89,456,007 over the weekend, representing the largest amount ever to be raised by a national telethon, said organizers. Marie Osmond, host of the 21-hour show after the final toteboard was unveiled, said: “Thanks to the love and generous support of people all over the country, the kids are the real winners today.” This year’s telethon was broadcast by 180 television stations and was seen in the United States, Canada and the Soviet Union.
