$250,000 Raised in Drive for 2 Catholic Schools

Parishioners, local businesses and community leaders have raised $250,000 for the high school and elementary school affiliated with St. Monica Catholic Church in Santa Monica, school officials have announced.
Most of the money, $200,000, will go to St. Monica High School for a 10% increase in teachers’ salaries and for hiring a counselor, an administrator and another teacher at the 51-year-old school, said the principal, Sister Cheryl Milner. Teacher salaries now start at $23,000, she said.
The fund-raising was spearheaded by Bill Mortensen, chairman of First Federal Bank of California, and by lawyer Richard Riordan.
The 300-student elementary school will get $50,000 that will be used to increase the salaries of the 11 teachers there.
