P.M. BRIEFING : Northwest Hires Beatrice Chief

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Northwest Airlines today named Frederick B. Rentschler president and chief executive officer and a director. Frederic V. Malek, formerly Northwest president, becomes vice chairman.
Rentschler, president and chief executive officer at Beatrice Co., will manage the operations of Northwest, America’s fourth largest airline.
He has held chief executive positions for 16 years, including the top post at Beatrice for the last three years. Earlier, he was president and chief executive of Beatrice’s U.S. food group and an executive vice president of the parent company.
Beatrice encompasses many well-known food products, including Hunt tomato products, Wesson oils, Swift and Eckrich meats, LaChoy and Orville Redenbacher popcorn.
