Liberian Troops Loot, Rampage as Rebels Close In

MONROVIA, Liberia — Government troops ransacked shops in Monrovia in an all-night looting and shooting spree today, hours after the army chief of embattled President Samuel Doe fled the country as rebels tightened their grip on the crumbling capital.
Doe’s troops shot their way into shops, warehouses and restaurants and emptied them in an overnight rampage as rebels battled troops in the city’s eastern and western suburbs for a fourth consecutive day.
As morning broke, frightened Monrovians ventured out into the deserted streets and discovered at least 16 bodies after the night’s shooting.
