Aaron Pryor won’t be able to fight in New York until at least September, when the doctor who examined him will present his conclusions to the State Athletic Commission’s medical board.
Vincent Giovinazzo, a commission-appointed ophthalmologist, examined the former junior-welterweight champion for 2 1/2 hours to determine if his left eye has sufficiently healed from surgery in January of 1989 to repair a detached retina and remove cataracts.
Three other ophthalmologists have already cleared Pryor to fight, including doctors in Canada and the Bahamas, but New York requires a boxer to see one of its own physicians before granting a state license.
Pryor was the International Boxing Federation and WBC champion in 1980-85.
