El Monte : Medical Plan for Prisoners

The City Council approved an agreement with Greater El Monte Community Hospital to provide medical treatment for prisoners in city custody.

The Police Department has included $40,000 in its 1990-91 budget for prisoner medical expenses, about the same amount spent in 1989-90 for prisoner care at the hospital. Police Chief Wayne Clayton said the alternative of taking prisoners to Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center for free treatment would be more costly. “The officer hours lost while transporting and waiting with the prisoner at the hospital are excessive,” Clayton said in a memorandum.
