‘Voters Give Congressmen Good Reviews’
I wasn’t surprised to read that our Orange County congressmen are out of touch with the voters on the issue of gay rights. I have always given the voters of Orange County more credit than their national reputation as being somewhere to the right of the KKK.
Most Orange County residents know the difference between the ridiculous “special rights” argument of our congressmen and the simple fact that gays and lesbians are discriminated against in jobs and housing and need protection--not to have “special rights” but to be brought up to an equal level with the other 90% of the population.
Rep. Dannemeyer admits in your article that he thinks it’s all right to evict suspected gay and/or lesbian tenants for no reason other than their sexuality. Would he also allow the same privilege to landlords who don’t like African-Americans or Asians? How about letting neighborhoods or cities ban all nonwhite, non-heterosexual residents, Mr. Dannemeyer?
Until the time comes when people, congressmen included, treat each other as equal human beings, protection for minority groups will continue to be a necessity.
