Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : A Battle Plan Set for Civil War Sites

Interior Secretary Manuel Lujan Jr. announced a campaign to preserve historic battlefields--especially from the Civil War--through cooperative efforts with states and private groups. Lujan will ask Congress for $15 million to create a commission of historical experts to identify threatened battlefields and set priorities for protection. He said the commission will include five citizens recognized as experts in the history of the Civil War, the chairman of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, and six citizens recommended by Congress. The director of the National Park Service will serve as director.
