WORLD IN BRIEF : LIBERIA : Peacekeeping Force Heads for War Zone

A West African peacekeeping force boarded warships in Sierra Leone with orders to halt an 8-month-old civil war in Liberia. More than 3,000 soldiers from Nigeria, Ghana, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Gambia and Togo are expected to reach Monrovia by the end of the week, according to African and Western diplomats. African leaders have ordered their soldiers to fight, if necessary, to end the fighting between President Samuel K. Doe’s soldiers and two rival rebel groups trying to overthrow him. Rebel leader Charles Taylor, whose forces control most of the country, has threatened to attack any foreign troops that intervene in the war.
