Venice : Permit Parking Considered

Venice-area Councilwoman Ruth Galanter has asked the Los Angeles Department of Transportation to study permit parking for five Venice neighborhoods inundated with beach-goers and their cars each summer.

The move to offer relief to residents may be in conflict with the California Coastal Commission philosophy that parking near the beach must be available to visitors.

But Galanter said in a press release that it may be necessary because Venice, designed at the turn of the century, cannot accommodate the 5 million beach visitors each summer who “swarm through the area looking for places near the beach to leave their cars.”

The five neighborhoods under study are:

* North Venice--Ocean Front Walk to 4th Street, Santa Monica border to Windward Avenue.

* Central Venice--Main Street to Electric Avenue, Brooks to North Venice Boulevard.

* Mid-Beach/Canals--Windward to Washington Street, Ocean Front Walk to Pacific Avenue, including the Venice Canals.

* South of Canals/Via Dolce--Sherman Canal to Washington Street, Grand Canal to Beach Avenue and Via Dolce.

* Marina Peninsula--Washington Street to Via Marina, Ocean Front Walk to Grand Canal/Ballona Lagoon.
