Martha Hycner, who volunteered for a senior meal program in the Santa Clarita Valley, has died in Valencia. She was 68.
Mrs. Hycner died Saturday of cancer, said her daughter, Joyce Herrin.
She was born Martha Higgins on Aug. 4, 1922, in Jersey City, N.J., and graduated from high school in New York. After raising her family, she moved to Chicago in 1970, where she worked as a registered nurse until 1983, when she came to Saugus.
Twice a week, Mrs. Hycner packed lunches for homebound senior citizens as part of the Home Delivered Meal program at the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center from 1984 until November.
She is survived by her son, David Hycner of Colorado Springs, Colo.; daughters, Joyce Herrin of Saugus and Gloria Mullane, also of Colorado Springs; sisters, Joyce Wertz of Corning, N.Y., Pauline Newell of Elmira, N.Y., and Grace Lane of Covington, Ky.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
No local services are planned. Burial will be this week in Woodlawn National Cemetery in Elmira. Donations can be made in Mrs. Hycner’s name to the Home Delivered Meal program at the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center or the American Cancer Society. Eternal Valley Mortuary is handling arrangements.
