A motorcyclist was killed Friday morning when he lost control of his bike and was hit by a car on a winding Back Bay street, police said.
Newport Beach Police Sgt. Andy Gonis said the unidentified motorcyclist was riding his 1981 black Suzuki 400 northbound on Irvine Avenue near Monte Vista Avenue at 9:40 a.m. at a high rate of speed when he apparently lost control.
Traffic investigators later determined the rider was “ejected from the seat” of the bike when the front wheel hit a curb, Gonis said.
“He probably couldn’t negotiate the curve,” he said.
Gonis said the cyclist flew over the center divider and was struck by a Volvo going in the opposite direction.
The rider, who was not wearing a helmet, died at the scene from major internal and head injuries, Gonis said.
