SDSU Wins ASICS Opener

San Diego State’s women’s volleyball team was the only local one to win its first-round match of the ASICS Grand Prix at SDSU Thursday. The Aztecs defeated Hofstra, 2-15, 15-11, 15-8, 15-8, at Peterson Gym. Angela Martin had 22 kills.
The University of San Diego, in the same pool, lost to Arizona State, 15-3, 15-1, 14-16, 15-2. U.S. International lost to Pepperdine, 15-2, 15-4, 15-8 in pool B at the Physical Education Gym.
HOCKEY
Dave Korol, a 25-year-old defenseman, is the newest addition to the San Diego Gulls hockey team, General Manager Don Waddell announced. Korol scored one goal and had 12 assists in 62 games with the Phoenix Roadrunners last season.
SOCCER
USIU’s women defeated host Azusa Pacific, 4-0, in its season opener. Junior Nicky Roche had a goal and an assist. Azusa is 0-2.
Junior Kalyn Shea scored UC San Diego’s only goal in a 1-0 victory over host San Francisco State. UCSD is 2-0, SFS 0-1.
Sophomore Noel Pekel scored his second game-winning goal with two minutes remaining in overtime as the USIU men defeated Cal Baptist, 3-2. USIU is 2-0.
SURFING
Kelly Slater, of Cocoa Beach, Fla., scored three perfect 10s, a first on the Bud Pro Surfing Tour, and won his heat to advance to today’s fifth round of the Pro-Am division of the Body Glove Surf Bout at Lower Trestles, Camp Pendleton.
RACEWALKING
American record-holder Debbie Lawrence is among those expected to compete in the NaturalSport 10K Racewalk Saturday. The race will begin, at 10:30 a.m., and end at the Town and Country Hotel.
