Oxnard Issue Should City Change Its...

This has come up many times. It’s nothing new and it seems to me it’s a manufactured issue by people such as political candidates who want to have something to discuss. I was born and raised in Oxnard and I feel comfortable with the name. When I was in school in the Bay Area, I would tell my friends I’m from Oxnard and they would make fun of the name, but I’m not offended by it. I guess it’s kind of guttural-sounding and it could be more pleasant, but it’s not that bad. Generally, the people who want to change the name moved here yesterday. If you lived here a long time, you grew up with the name and are used to it. What would changing the name do except create problems? There would be a tremendous problem in changing maps. Oxnard was the home of the people who developed a sugar beet factory. Whatever name you’re born with, you should bring honor to that name, and we’re bringing honor to the Oxnard family’s name.
