Hoping to end a turbulent period of racial tension, the city is gearing up to celebrate its diversity with a week of special activities.
Harmony Week in Monterey Park will be held Oct. 20-28 and will include a family exchange for people of different ethnic groups to “switch” family members for a day; a film festival, including a preview screening of “America Becoming,” a 90-minute documentary about Monterey Park and five other U.S. cities; a community forum to discuss multicultural issues; a concert, and an essay contest on what it means to live in a diverse community.
Mayor Judy Chu, whose idea it was to have Harmony Week, announced the events Tuesday and said she hopes it will signal a new beginning for the city.
