A woman who had just celebrated her birthday was killed today when she lost control of her car on a freeway off-ramp and the vehicle slammed into a tree, authorities said.
The Anaheim woman turned 28 Wednesday, and her car was filled with flowers and presents when officers and paramedics found her in the wreckage shortly after 12:15 a.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Lyle Whitten said.
The woman, whose name was withheld until relatives could be notified, was taking the Brookhurst Street off-ramp from the northbound San Diego Freeway, Whitten said.
She struck the left curb of the off-ramp, lost control of the 1985 Nissan and slid sideways over the edge of the freeway, he said. The car flew about 20 feet off the freeway and slammed roof-first into a foot-thick tree. The impact crushed the top of the car and killed the woman instantly.
Officers said the woman was apparently speeding when she lost control.
