LUSAKA, Zambia — Zambian troops killed five rebels and captured one member of the Mozambique National Resistance Movement who ambushed a bus in the country’s eastern province this week, a local paper reported Friday.
The official Zambia Daily Mail, quoting witnesses, said the right-wing rebels were killed Tuesday by troops patrolling in civilian vehicles after the rebels had shot at the tires of a bus carrying 70 passengers.
Security officials in Zambia declined to comment on Tuesday’s incident.
Government troops were brought in after a series of attacks by Mozambican guerrillas along the border.
