CARACAS : A Latin Summit

Presidents of the “Rio Group,” seven Latin American countries including the biggest ones in the region, hold their annual summit meeting in Caracas, the Venezuelan capital, on Thursday. The “Initiative for the Americas,” President Bush’s proposal for increased inter-American economic cooperation, is expected to be high on the agenda.
Bush’s plan calls for greater U.S. aid, trade and investment in Latin America. Some Latin American leaders, notably Brazilian President Fernando Collor de Mello, want the United States to share its technology more generously.
The Rio Group’s members are Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Venezuela, Peru and Uruguay--countries with a combined population of nearly 350 million.
