CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — National Football League referee Dick Jorgensen died today of cancer. He was 56.
Jorgensen, president of Marine Bank of Champaign-Urbana and a community leader, had worked for 22 years as an official.
He worked the Super Bowl last January.
“Dick Jorgensen’s presence on a football field was felt by everyone, just as it was in his daily life,” said Illinois Coach John Mackovic, a former NFL coach. “No one represented football and the art of officiating with more class and distinction.”
