An inmate injured in a struggle with five deputies at the Hall of Justice Jail in downtown Los Angeles was reported in guarded condition Tuesday as the Sheriff’s Department suspended one deputy and opened an investigation of the incident, officials said.
Sgt. Joaquin Herran said that when inmate Michael Frlekin, 26, of San Pedro began acting in a “bizarre” manner Monday, a deputy pulled him from a line of inmates heading for dinner and escorted him to an adjacent area.
According to Herran, Frlekin attacked the deputy, who called for aid and was joined by four deputies in subduing the inmate. After the scuffle, Frlekin was hospitalized at County-USC Medical Center.
One of the deputies--whose name was not released--was suspended with pay, pending an internal investigation, Herran said.
Frlekin had been arrested in February for assault with a deadly weapon and escape, Herran said.
