Glendale snapped a 13-game losing streak to Muir Friday night with a 23-8 Pacific League victory at Glendale High.
The Dynamiters, who last beat the Mustangs in 1965, are in contention to win their first league title since 1980.
Junior running back Pathon Rucker, the state’s scoring leader, was limited to 76 yards, but he scored two touchdowns for Glendale. One of them came on a 70-yard pass play from Eric Kiesau that gave Glendale a 23-0 lead midway through the third quarter.
“It was a great team effort,” said Rucker, who has rushed for 1,259 yards and scored 25 touchdowns this season. “We’re up for all our games, not just because it’s Muir.”
The Dynamiters, who finished 4-6 last season, improved to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in league play and are off to their best start in the school’s history. Muir, the defending Southern Section Division II co-champion, is 5-3 and 2-1.
Muir played without four starters. Three players--including receiver Demetrice Martin and defensive back Reggie Reser, two of the top college prospects in Southern California--were suspended for missing practice Monday.
