An altercation at the end of a sophomore football game between Hawthorne and Inglewood high schools Thursday is being investigated by Inglewood police and officials at the Centinela Valley Union High School District.
Inglewood police said Saturday they received complaints of the incident from a member of the Hawthorne coaching staff and an Inglewood High School student.
The skirmish occurred immediately after Hawthorne won the game at Sentinel Field in Inglewood, said Dan Finnegan, public information officer for the Centinela Valley district.
Finnegan said he had received reports that Inglewood players started a fight with the Hawthorne team after the game. One unidentified Hawthorne cheerleader was treated for injuries, Finnegan said. District officials are gathering reports from Hawthorne High School officials who attended the game, he said.
A fight broke out when Hawthorne football players and visitors were leaving, said Maurice Wiley, Inglewood school district spokesman.
“I have a feeling it was hot tempers more than anything else,” Wiley said.
Finnegan said game referees are planning to file a report with the California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section, the governing body for high school sports in the region.
