NHL ROUNDUP : Moog Stops Canadiens, Bruins Go Into Lead, 2-0

In an early season battle for the Adams Division lead, Andy Moog and the Boston Bruins prevailed Wednesday night at Montreal by defeating Patrick Roy and the Canadiens, 2-0.

As expected, Moog and Roy engaged in a brilliant goaltending duel. For two periods, the goalies were in charge.

But in the first minute of the third period, the young Montreal defense made a mistake and the Bruins capitalized.

Brent Gilchrist tried a clearing pass, Glen Wesley of the Bruins intercepted it and Dave Christian converted the pass into a goal. It remained a dogfight until defenseman Ray Bourque knocked the puck into an empty net with six seconds to play.

The victory gave the division-leading Bruins a 9-5-2 record and a two-point lead over the Canadiens (8-7-2).

Moog stopped 23 shots for his first shutout in 11 games. It was the third time the Canadiens have been shut out.

Moog, who allowed two goals early in a win over the Rangers Monday night, has not given up a score in the last 116 minutes.

New York Rangers 6, Buffalo 2--John Ogrodnick had two goals and an assist in a four-goal outburst in the second period at New York that ended the Rangers’ nine-game winless streak (0-8-1) against Buffalo.

The Rangers, after winning 11 of 12 in an early season spurt, ended a three-game losing streak.

New York Islanders 6, New Jersey 3--The Islanders scored four goals in the third period to end the Devils’ home ice unbeaten streak at East Rutherford, N.J.

The Devils, 7-0-1 coming in, were the last team unbeaten at home this season.

Paul Flatley’s goal broke a 3-3 tie with 6:25 to play. Pat LaFontaine and Brent Sutter scored later.
