Although most Californians claim to be environmentalists, the decisive loss of Proposition 128 proves that many are not. Because of extensive media coverage, most citizens know what lies ahead for our civilization if we fail to act now. Ozone depletion and the greenhouse effect are more than clinical terms. All respected scientists warn that such events will trigger the extinction of the human race.
Yet when an initiative with real teeth attacks this deadly cancer, Californians worry that it may dig too deep into their pocketbooks. To them the superfluous luxuries of life are more important than life itself. The future of planet Earth teeters on the balance of their checkbooks.
Maybe Freud was right when he said humans are bent on self-destruction.
