UCSD Women Advance to Volleyball Semis

The UC San Diego women’s volleyball team won its eighth NCAA Division III West Regional championship in 10 years Saturday night at Pomona, and advanced to Friday’s Division III semifinal against College of St. Benedict (Minn.) (30-3) at a site to be announced today.
Kill leaders Liz Vesanovic (11) and Vikki Van Duyne (10) paced the No. 2 Tritons to a 15-6, 15-6, 15-12 victory over Pomona Pitzer. UCSD (35-8) was upset in the regionals last year but were national champions from 1986 through 1988.
Defending champion and No. 1 ranked Washington University (30-2) will meet Juniata (Penn.) (41-8) in the other semifinal Friday.
Angie Rais and Maria Richard picked up 11 kills each as the University of San Diego defeated St. Mary’s, 15-11, 15-4, 15-8, 15-11 in a West Coast Conference match at USD. Heather Dalley had three service aces for USD.
CROSS-COUNTRY
UC San Diego men’s and women’s teams finished second to Occidental at the NCAA Division III Regionals at Bonelli Park in Pomona, but the men advanced to Saturday’s nationals in Grinnell, Iowa as the top two teams compete.
