Tiebreaking Vote Puts Rio Mesa in Playoffs

After finishing in a three-way tie for third place in league play, the Rio Mesa High football team Saturday was selected as the Channel League’s third playoff representative by a vote of the eight member schools’ principals.
Rio Mesa, San Marcos and Oxnard all finished with a 4-3 league record. According to league tiebreaking criteria, a playoff representative was chosen by a vote of principals because there was no clear winner in head-to-head competition.
Rio Mesa (6-4 overall) was the most consistent of the trio, having lost its three league games by a combined seven points. The Spartans, who won three of their last four games, bolstered their chances by defeating first-place Ventura, 36-28, Friday night.
