New Record for British Art: A painting by 19th-Century British artist John Constable fetched a record $21.1 million at a London auction Wednesday. Constable, Britain’s greatest landscape artist, painted “The Lock” depicting a rural canal scene in the 1820s. Sotheby’s said it was an auction record for a British painting. The painting was bought by Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza, of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Foundation in Lugano, Switzerland.
