Three people were being treated at San Fernando Valley hospitals Tuesday for injuries received when a suspected drunk driver being chased by police smashed into a car in a North Hollywood intersection, authorities said.
Mario Pacheco, 58, was in serious condition at Northridge Hospital Medical Center after the Monday night accident in which he suffered a bruised heart, broken ribs and lacerations, police said. Pacheco was placed under arrest on suspicion of drunk driving, said Los Angeles Police Lt. Michael Renshaw.
Also in serious condition at the hospital was Felix Ruiz, 24, said Nursing Supervisor Denise Stewart.
Ruiz was a passenger in the car Pacheco allegedly hit about 9 p.m. Monday. The driver, Sylvia Flig, 38, was in fair condition at Holy Cross Medical Center with extensive facial cuts, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Renshaw said Pacheco ran a red light and hit Flig’s car at Victory and Laurel Canyon boulevards as he was being chased by officers in a patrol car who had tried to pull him over because he was driving erratically.
