CHARLESTON, S.C. — A brass band played, Santa Claus handed out candy to tots and balloons filled the air Tuesday as two Charleston-based ships returned from a six-month deployment in the Persian Gulf.
The guided missile frigates Taylor and Robert G. Bradley were in the gulf when Iraq invaded Kuwait Aug. 2.
Since then, the vessels were involved in intercepting more than 500 ships and boats in the gulf while enforcing the U.N. blockade against Iraq.
In August, the Bradley fired across the bow of an Iraqi tanker. The Taylor did not discharge its guns during its tour, said Cmdr. Kevin Green.
