SEATTLE — Demolition work began this week at the Kingdome to tear down the stadium’s left field wall in order to add 12 feet in left field for Seattle Mariners games in the 1991 baseball season.
The project is costing King County $902,324.
Workers began demolishing the concrete wall after Sunday’s NFL game between the Seattle Seahawks and the Houston Oilers, Kingdome spokeswoman Carol Keaton said.
The remodeling project, done at the Mariners’ request, is expected to increase the distance from home plate to the left field wall from 324 feet to 336 feet.
In addition, Keaton said workers began cutting and fitting a new AstroTurf surface for baseball this week. The new surface will be in place when the Mariners open their 15th season in April.
