Returning from a congressional tour of Saudi Arabia, Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley) said Monday he was encouraged by U.S. preparations to fight against Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and by American soldiers’ desire to stop “this madman.”
“Our troops are as prepared as we could have them prepared,” said Gallegly, who joined a 19-member congressional delegation on a five-day trip to Saudi Arabia and Israel. He said he found morale high among the 200,000 troops stationed in the Saudi desert.
The delegation, led by Rep. Anthony C. Beilenson (D-Los Angeles), chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, spent four days last week visiting Saudi and U.S. military leaders and U.S. troops.
