California IN BRIEF : FRESNO : School Audit Finds $2.2-Million Deficit

In the latest of a series of problems plaguing the state’s third-largest school district, auditors have uncovered a $2.2-million deficit that shocked Fresno school officials. Supt. Frank Abbott said he will propose $1.8 million in cuts next month to help balance this year’s $300-million budget. The audit comes at the end of a tumultuous year for the school district. Three trustees were recalled, a superintendent was fired eight months after being hired and a state audit revealed more than $20,000 in illegal travel expenses by former Deputy Supt. Joe Lee.
