Three men were killed and one man was critically injured today when a driver apparently attempted to beat a train filled with holiday travelers across the railroad tracks in Chatsworth, authorities said.
The train collided with the car shortly before 11 a.m. as it was crossing Lassen Street west of De Soto Avenue.
Eyewitness Tammy Gray, 21, who was stopped at the crossing, said the car, a small blue sedan, passed her as she was stopped at the crossing. The car’s occupants “looked like they were trying to beat the train, and they didn’t,” she said.
Authorities said the train, the AmTrak Coast Starlight, was bound for Seattle. Its next stop was to have been Simi Valley.
