Golden State Ranked First: California is the headquarters for more industry-leading American companies than any other state in the nation, according to an annual survey by Forbes magazine. Forbes ranked 1,177 companies in 20 industries according to their five-year average return on equity. California took over the top spot with 11 companies ranked No. 1, five more than last year. New York State slipped to second with six. New York City remained the top headquarters city, with Los Angeles and Chicago tied for second place.
