NATION : Gulf Action Cost Over $30 Billion

WASHINGTON — Even if U.S. troops are not sent into combat against Iraq, the costs of Operation Desert Shield will exceed $30 billion this year, the House Budget Committee was told today.
Actual armed hostilities could boost the costs by “hundreds of millions of dollars per day,” the General Accounting Office said.
Cash and in-kind contributions from other countries to help offset costs to the United States are relatively small, amounting to about $4.6 billion, the GAO reported.
