COSTA MESA — Twenty of the top boys’ volleyball teams in the county--with one notable omission--will participate in the Orange County championships Saturday at Estancia High School.
Marina, the county’s top-ranked team, won’t be competing in the single-elimination tournament. Estancia Coach Tom Pestolesi, the tournament director, said Marina entered several early-season tournaments and couldn’t fit the county championships into its schedule.
Matches in the four pool-play divisions start at 9 a.m. The top three teams from each pool will advance to the next round.
All first-round, quarterfinal and semifinal matches will be one 15-point game. The championship game will be best two of three.
The first-round pools:
Pool 1--Newport Harbor, Edison, San Clemente, Estancia and La Quinta.
Pool 2--Corona del Mar, Capistrano Valley, University, Tustin and Servite.
Pool 3--Laguna Beach, Huntington Beach, Irvine, Mater Dei and Costa Mesa.
Pool 4--Woodbridge, El Toro, Santa Margarita, Mission Viejo and Esperanza.
