Maine Governor Seeks 2-Day State Shutdown

AUGUSTA, Me. — Gov. John R. McKernan Jr. on Monday proposed a two-day shutdown of state government, a move that would make Maine the second New England state to close its doors temporarily amid recession and growing budget deficits.
The proposed shutdown of services deemed non-essential came as McKernan, a Republican, announced that the state faced a nearly $77-million deficit.
Rhode Island has taken similar steps. Massachusetts Gov. William F. Weld is preparing for a weeklong shutdown of state government in June.
