Sergei Bubka of the Soviet Union eased past teammate Igor Potapovich to win the pole vault at 19 feet 0 3/4 inches at Alcobendas, Spain, but didn’t try to go higher because of wind gusts.
Larry Myricks of the United States, making his first European appearance after serving a one-year suspension for using stimulants, won the long jump at 26-7 1/4.
