BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Umpire McSherry Collapses on Field

Umpire John McSherry collapsed during the game between the Atlanta Braves and St. Louis Cardinals at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium and was hospitalized.
McSherry, the second base umpire, collapsed as the third inning was about to begin. He was led to the Braves’ dugout and was attended by team physician Robert Crowe.
The Braves said that McSherry was under observation at Piedmont Hospital and that he was not believed to be seriously ill.
The weather was warm and muggy, with a gametime temperature of 89 degrees. McSherry, 46, has been a National League umpire since June 1, 1971.
