CYCLING / RACE ACROSS AMERICA : Ellis Expected to Win Women’s Division Today

Cathy Ellis of Cambridge, Mass., remains the leader of the women’s division of Race Across America and is projected to finish this evening.
Ellis passed through Plains, Ga., at 7:07 p.m. (PDT) Wednesday, 2,683 miles into the 2,930-mile cross-country bicycle race that began July 27 in Irvine.
If she continues her pace of 9.8 m.p.h. and 243 miles per day, Ellis will reach the finish line in Savannah, Ga., at about 7:30 p.m. tonight.
Debbie Ann Breaud of Burleson, Tex., is about 19 hours behind Ellis.
Bob Forney of Denver won the men’s division for the second consecutive year when he crossed the finish line at 2:33 a.m. Monday. It took him 8 days 16 hours 44 minutes to complete the ride.
In the mixed tandem competition, Cherie and David Moore of Orange reached Jacksonville, Ga., 2,786 miles into the race at 7:09 p.m. Wednesday. They are expected to reach Savannah at about 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
