University of San Diego football Coach Brian Fogarty will open his ninth preseason camp Sunday at USD. Approximately 110 players, including 75 returning letter winners, will report for physicals and drills at 8 a.m.
USD is coming off back-to-back 7-2 seasons. The Toreros open their 10-game season at home Sept. 7 againt Menlo College.
SOCCER
Goalie Kyle Campbell of Del Mar and Torrey Pines High saved a penalty shot taken by Italy’s Alessandro Del Piero in the 13th minute of the opening game in the under-17 World Championships in Montecatini, Italy. The save proved crucial as the U.S. upset the host Italians, 1-0.
Mike Dunne, a defender from Batavia, Ill., scored on an eight-yard header five minutes after Campbell stopped the penalty shot.
Campbell preserved the victory by making several good saves in the second half.
The Americans lead Group A with two points and have a good chance to advance to the quarterfinals. Argentina and China also are in Group A.
SAILING
Skipper Charlie Cummings of Alamitos Bay Yacht Club and crew Tom Devlin won the championship of the Gold Flight of the Lido 14 National Championships with a four-day point toal of 11.5.
The Silver Flight was won by Gabriel Ferranola and his crew Sheryl Ferranola, also from the ABYC, with 9.75 points. The event was hosted by the Mission Bay Yacht Club.
