DEL MAR — Trainer Ron McAnally, probably the most successful trainer of Argentine horses these days, turned loose a pair of them at Del Mar Friday, and Ibero and Fanatic Boy ran 1-2 in the $60,000 Windy Sands Handicap.
Ibero won the mile dirt race in a quick 1:34 2/5, finishing 2 1/4 lengths ahead of stablemate Fanatic Boy, making his second start in the United States. Fanatic Boy is a son of Mat Boy, who also sired Festin, a McAnally stakes winner from Argentina. McAnally also trained the Argentina-bred Bayakoa, who won Eclipse Awards in 1989-90.
Ibero, ridden by Alex Solis, paid $22 to win, setting up a $2 exacta of $122.
