No Cutbacks for School Employees

The Inglewood school board approved a $100-million budget this week but rejected an austerity plan that would have reduced hours for hundreds of employees.

To balance the budget, officials in the Inglewood Unified School District had considered cutting one month from employees’ schedules so that 12-month employees would be required to take a month off without pay and 11-month employees would have to take two months off without pay.

In rejecting the cutback in hours, the school board decided Wednesday that the district’s financial picture was not as grim as it had appeared earlier in the summer. District spokesman Maurice Wiley said unanticipated revenue from the state and county allowed the district to avoid the cutbacks.

Nine hundred of the district’s 1,500 employees would have been affected by the move. It would not have affected teachers or certain high-level district administrators.
