PALERMO, Sicily — Shops, banks and factories closed and thousands marched through the streets Thursday to protest the killing of a businessman who refused to pay bribes to the Mafia.
The march was organized by union and business leaders outraged by the murder of Libero Grassi, 67, owner of a clothing factory who was gunned down Aug. 29.
He became a national hero after going to police in January to report a shakedown by Sicilian mobsters and announcing publicly that he would not pay protection money.
