Alhambra : Trash Reduction Planned

To meet state requirements, the City Council adopted a plan Monday to cut in half by the year 2000 the amount of trash it generates.
The city, which has already met its 25% trash-reduction goal for 1995, will implement a 103-point program that includes education, buying recycled goods, composting, broadening curbside recycling to include mixed paper and other materials, helping residents get off junk-mail lists, and helping supermarkets recycle fat and bones and encouraging their use of reusable containers.
The city now generates 76,684 tons of trash a year. Most of it ends up in dumps, but 26% is recycled or used as a vegetation trash-cover at the dumps.
