Council Again Delays Vote on DWP Rate Hikes

The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday postponed a vote on proposed water and electric rate increases until next year. And for the second time, the council instructed Department of Water and Power officials to come back with a smaller request for water revenues.
The DWP initially sought an 11% increase in water rates and a 7% hike in electric rates. Since then, the water rate has been reduced to 6.85% and on Tuesday council members told DWP officials to bring back a rate proposal of just 3.6%. The power rate proposal remains unchanged.
DWP General Manager Dan Waters said the agency is losing about $10 million for every month that the rate requests are delayed. The council has been deliberating over the political hot potato since October.
